Nijmegen School of Management
Nijmegen School of Management
Vacancy number: 27.03.10
Closing date: 20 March 2010
Job description
The research project "Organizational Networks, Diversity and
Innovation" is
partly funded by Technology Foundation STW, whose main aim is to facilitate
knowledge transfer between technical sciences and users by bringing scientific
researchers and potential users together and by funding top-flight research
in the technical and applied sciences.
You will examine the relation between networks and diversity in STW-
projects. Successful projects produce scientific as well as technological
and societal yields. To achieve success in this field, multiple stakeholders
are required that come from various backgrounds. Networks entail formal
and informal organizational processes as network relations are formed
in opportunity structures (e.g. collaborations) but are also subject to
choice (e.g. preference for certain network contacts).
Research has shown a relation between diversity and networks as people
prefer social interactions with like-minded people. Therefore, networks
play an important part in the development of inequalities. To come to
a better understanding of inclusion and exclusion processes in networks,
this research examines how the various stakeholders function in networks.
The project will pay attention to a wide variety of social categories
(gender, ethnicity, age, class, physical ability) and their intersections
in networks.
You will use social network analysis (SNA) to map the network structures
of selected projects as well as qualitative research (interviews and observations)
to examine how stakeholders build, use and maintain these networks.
Requirements
You must have a Master's degree in Management or Social Sciences and
should be interested in both organizational network research and issues
of gender and diversity. You should have excellent skills in research,
planning, writing and presentation, and a firm grasp of Dutch and English
language. Experience with qualitative as well as quantitative research
methods is recommendable.
Organization
You will be appointed to the Chair of Strategic Human Resource Management
at the Institute for Management Research.
You will be part of the Business Administration research programme ‘Relational
Enterprise’ which examines how social processes and relationships
determine the ways in which organizations perform.
Relational Enterprise is one of the core themes of the Institute for
Management Research (IMR) which conducts fundamental and applied research
on the development, design and effectiveness of the public and private
structures that regulate, govern and manage human interaction. These
structures exist at various levels, ranging from societies to urban networks
and from macro-economic systems to individual organizations and businesses.
